Introducing a Knockout Drive: the All-New 2021 Acura TLX

Acura is presenting the TLX as the quickest, best-handling, and most well-appointed sedan in the brand’s 35-year history. The all-new midsize model does not share its platform with any crossovers or SUVs and was designed to keep the four-door sports sedan fires burning at Acura since Acura is discontinuing the full-size RLX. The retirement of the RLX makes the TLX it is largest non-utility offering.

Its wide, low, long, and curvy body features a stretched hood that gives it the look of a rear-wheel-drive model despite being built on a front-drive-based platform with a transversely mounted four-cylinder engine.

Complementing its stunning new design and athletic stance, the TLX’s new 2.0-liter DOHC VTEC Turbo delivers more peak torque than the outgoing 3.5-liter V6, with a dramatic increase at the low end of the rev range. Compared to the outgoing entry 2.4L model, the new TLX offers substantially more performance and major increases to technologies and premium amenities – establishing a new and more upmarket entry point for the Acura sedan.

Additional performance improvements for the 2021 TLX include a quick-shifting 10-speed transmission, sport-tuned chassis with double-wishbone front suspension, NSX-derived electro-servo brake-by-wire technology, and available adaptive dampers.

The TLX has a warm interior design, with lots of layers, curves, beautiful wood, and soft, stitched materials throughout that’s in lockstep with the brand’s best-selling RDX SUV. That includes sporty, form-fitting seats and an infotainment system controlled by a pad on the center console that is easier to use and safer than a touchscreen display. Acura’s True Touchpad interface features a padded rest for your hand that’s mounted ahead of a wireless smartphone charging pad.

The TLX doesn’t beg you to drive it as you stole it at first but put it in Sport mode and you’ll realize it is labeled accurately. It firms up the computer-controlled shocks, adds weight to the steering, and makes the throttle and transmission more aggressive. The TLX enjoys a good curve and doesn’t mind if you throw it into one with authority. Its double-wishbone front suspension provides solid moves and lets it handle more than you’ll probably ever dish out. The electric-assist brakes.

If music is more your thing, the audio system that comes in top models is pretty epic. The 710-watt ELS Studio 3D setup from Panasonic permeates you with 17 speakers, including in the ceiling and twin subwoofers. Additional tech includes a head-up display and a driver-assist package with automatic emergency brakes, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control that makes it a great place to commute in, the TLX is a lot more fun when you have full control.
