April is National Car Care month and with all this extra time that many of us have, it is the perfect chance to give our cars a little extra love. Routine maintenance is important when it comes to preventing costly repairs, avoiding accidents and maintaining the value of your car. This is why we are going over two major systems, engine cooling system and the steering and suspension system, to get you more familiar with the functions of your vehicle. 

Engine Cooling System

The engine cooling system affects your car’s overall dependability and engine longevity. The key parts of the cooling system remove heat from the engine and automatic transmission and dissipate heat to the air outside. The water pump circulates coolant through the engine. The coolant absorbs heat and returns it to the radiator where heat is dissipated. The thermostat regulates the coolant temperature to keep it consistent for efficient engine operation. Factors that affect the replacement of cooling system parts include driving habits, operating conditions, type of vehicle, type of coolant used and frequency of coolant changes. Signs that you might need to change your car’s coolant include overheating, sweet smell, leaks and repeatedly needing to add fluid. If you suspect a problem with your cooling system, you should check it immediately.

Steering and Suspension

The steering and suspension systems are key safety-related systems that largely determine your car’s ride and handling. Have these systems checked regularly, at least once a year and usually with a wheel alignment. The suspension maintains the relationship between the wheels and the frame or unibody and the steering system interacts with the suspension system to provide vehicle control.
